Honolulu Hawaii Portrait Photography | Mahea part 2

Last week I posted Part 1 of Mahea’s photoshoot.  We grabbed a few more shots in front of a shipping container at the playground and then headed down to Waikiki.

Which photo is your favorite?  Let us know in the comments.  Big mahalos to Mahea for doing such an awesome job modeling for us!

Jeanette - I like the first one and the first one where she’s standing in front of the elevator sign with the suitcase. They’re all good though!

lauren -  I love the surf board ones at the end! The suitcase ones are awesome too tho.  Awesome job!

Jeff Stanford - nice!  Love the Elevators location

AshleyA - They’re all nice, but I think my favorite is either the first one with the surfboards (that’s what they are right?) or the one with her holding the suitcase in the lobby. Loving the abundance of light!

themoldycannoli - I like the first one, she seems comfortable and her smile looks genuine; she looks very happy.

theBAKERSphotography - thanks!  Mahea did an awesome job!  I really liked the elevator sign too, it was so dark in there but that back lighting worked out great!  I love doing photography in parking garages.

theBAKERSphotography - thanks Lauren!

theBAKERSphotography - thanks Jeff!

theBAKERSphotography - thanks Ashley!  No shortage of light in Hawaii :)  And yup they are surfboards.

theBAKERSphotography - Thanks Jihan!

Honolulu Hawaii Portrait Photographer | Mahea part 1

Jess and I met Mahea soon after moving out here to Hawaii.  I asked Mahea if she would consider modeling for us, which she seemed pretty excited about.  We have been talking about doing this photo shoot for a while now and this past Saturday actually got around to doing it.  Fun, and colorful were the two adjectives that Mahea was going for.  I think we nailed it.

We started out at one of her places of work.  The South Shore Grill.  They make up a mean mix plate, check them out for sure, conveniently located near Waikiki.  Our second location was a fun playground!

Which is your favorite photo?  Know Mahea?  Give her a shout in the comments and tell her what an awesome job she did!  Make sure to check back next week when we dress it up a bit for part 2!  (Click HERE to see part two!)

Relb49 - First one next to the sign.  That’s my favorite.

Cherylbaker_8_18 - Mahea,  you are  a beautiful person to photograph.  My favorite is the second set of double pictures, the one on the right.
Very colorful and the row of colored chairs in the background add to the colors.
These are great shots and can’t wait to see part 2.  Also the photographer that took your pictures is amazing too.
Beautiful job both of you.

Jillian - Love it!  Mahea, you’re a gorgeous model and you definitely achieved the fun and colorful themes!  My favorite is the California love one at the end.  :)

kelly - these are all so great it is had to choose, but my favorite is mahea coming down the slide in full color! :) i think these photos are fantastic–so bright and happy and full of life…just like mahea! great job photographers! and i had no idea SSG could look so pretty! :)

theBAKERSphotography - thanks kelly!

Pam B - Loved ’em all especially the colors @ SSG!!! Great work Bakers & beautiful photos Mahea … Awesome job!!!

jimjessbaker - thank you!

MrB - Dad likes the 4th one down da best, because it just brings out your beauty both from inside and out.   Da ones in SSG are also great to me because of the colors, both from the interior of SSG and those colors of your dress.  GREAT JOB BOTH TO YOU AND THE PHOTOGRAPHER.  MAHALO NUI LOA.

The One Photography Accessory You DON’T Need!

Mike Shoemaker | Ellicott City, MD

I recently did the tourist thing with our first visitor here in Hawaii.  I saw a lot of cameras during this time.

Here is ONE accessory that you don’t need.

Can you guess what it is?

Your LENS CAP!*

But… it protects my lens!

Buy a good uv filter and keep that on your lens at all times.  It will do all the protecting you need.  Here’s the uv filters I use.

None of my lenses have lens caps.  As soon as I get a new lens I throw on a good uv filter and put the lens cap in the box.

Lens caps are just one more step between you and the shot that you want!  I remember one of my photography students missing an epic shot of a helicopter taking off because he was fumbling with his lens cap.

With a UV filter, your lens is protected, and you can pick your camera up and shoot instantly.

*I’m writing about lens cap on detachable lenses for DSLRS.

Ready to ditch your lens cap?  Yes or No?  Let us know in the comments.

Ashley A - I still use the lens cap, but mainly just to make sure the filter stays in good condition while everything is in my bag.. As soon as a lens comes out of the bag, I take that thing of and stuff it somewhere like my back pocket. And I HAVE just popped it off and let it fall to the ground in order to get a shot I wanted. So it hasn’t been a real problem for me… so far 😉

Marc Andrew Scott - Yeah gonna have to look into that!

Megan McCormack - Good to know, I’ll have to switch to that. My lenses cap always ends up left in my pocket and generally being a pain to keep track of instead of protecting anything anyways

theBAKERSphotography - i remember losing a lens cap that I left on top of a car once, at the time it was a big deal, now who cares :)  Let me know how you like life without a lens cap!

theBAKERSphotography - do it!  hows your new dslr treating you Marc?

theBAKERSphotography - but what if you see something and don’t have your camera out?  that split second could be the difference between a good shot or not 😉  Also doesn’t your bag have separate compartments for your gear?  Your lenses shouldn’t be in any danger of stuff hitting it in the bag right?

Ashley A - I don’t know, I guess I’ve just never had that situation before, where the split second makes a difference… I totally could try it, cuz yes, my bag does have compartments. But honestly, my more pressing issue with “getting the shot” quickly is that I have the 10-25 and then the 70-200.. No “mid-range” type lens like the 24-105. So I basically have a 50/50 chance that the lens that will work for the situation is on the camera. That’s next on my list! Haha.

theBAKERSphotography - ahhhh… thats an interesting point, and sounds like a really good excuse to get a new lens :)

Ashley A - It is, isn’t it? I’ll get it eventually… I’m saving up! :)

Tim lease - I use a fanny pack to carry my lenses when im shooting, I do keep lens caps on but as soon as a lens comes out to be put on my camerathe lens cap comes right off and stays off, and I keep a lenspen in my pocket to get any finger prints off

Jeff Stanford - That makes so much sense.  I have the UV filter but still keep the lens cap on, oftentimes.  And look stupid going to take a photo, realising the cap is on, and spending seconds taking it off.  Definitely have missed an interesting shot or two.  haha.

theBAKERSphotography - haha, yup… you described it so vividly, i can see myself trying to take a photo with the cap on and feeling dumb :)  let us know how you like life capless :)

theBAKERSphotography - woah, fanny pack… upload a photo of that photo fanny pack.  and a lens pen… you’re super prepared.  my lenses need to be cleaned… i should do that before tmrws shoot.

Jeff Stanford -  will do :)

Jacob Angier - I remember when max did that! SO funny!! My caps are in a drawer..

theBAKERSphotography - haha, glad you remember that.  good times!

3 Online Resources To Use When Camera Shopping

My first digital SLR, my 20d served me VERY well for a long time
I regularly get asked by people, “what kind of camera should I buy?”  I addressed some questions that you might want to ask yourself in this post.  –>  3 Questions To Ask Yourself Before Buying a Camera

Here’s 3 more good resources to use when camera shopping.

1.  www.dpreview.com  – This is a website where you can do side by side comparisons of different cameras and read in depth hands on reviews.

2.  BHphotovideo.com –  This is my go to website when it comes to buying gear.  Check their prices and read the user reviews of the various cameras you are looking at.

3.  Amazon.com  –  I always try and check to see if Amazon’s prices are beating out B&H, sometimes they do, it also opens you up to a new set of user reviews.

What resources have you found valuable while camera shopping?

How To Capture That EPIC Night Time City Scape

Honolulu, Hawaii
I set out last weekend with the goal of getting an epic facebook cover photo.  So we rented a car, and went up to Tantulus Lookout. I had heard about this location before, so I decided to go up and grab this photo.  The shadow in the background on the left is Diamond Head.

To do any night time photography a TRIPOD is a MUST.

For night time photography you have to use LONG EXPOSURES.  This particular photo was taken with a 30 second exposure.  That is why a tripod is a must.  There is no way I could have hand held this for 30 seconds.

A trick that I learned when doing a lot of night photography was to set up your composition using a really high ISO. This way you can see if the composition is good without having to wait 30 seconds to find out.  The photos will be horrible quality but they aren’t going to be your final product.

Once you have the photo composed the way you want, crank your ISO back DOWN and open up your shutter to a long exposure!

Another thing thats important is to use a shutter release, OR set your camera to a 2 second delay once you push the shutter button.  Otherwise the motion of pushing the shutter button will cause your photo to be blurry.

Go experiment with some night photography!

Chris Bell - this picture is amazing. man, you know your way around a camera
